Electrical Distribution Systems (Wire harness) - Design and Release Engineer

Job ID
60221

We are the movers of the world and the makers of the future. We get up every day, roll up our sleeves and build a better world -- together. At Ford, we’re all a part of something bigger than ourselves. Are you ready to change the way the world moves?

As part of our Product Development team, you’ll help build the world-class, state-of-the-art smart vehicles we're known for. In our plants around the world, we’re constantly developing new technologies and processes to further increase our efficiency. You'll get the satisfaction of making great products people use and love.

In this position...

As a EDS Design and Release (D&R) Engineer, you will be at the forefront of defining the "nervous system" for our next-generation vehicles, contributing to world-class, state-of-the-art smart vehicles. You will play a critical role in the end-to-end design, development, validation, and release of low-voltage wiring harnesses, ensuring the reliable connectivity and optimal performance of critical vehicle systems.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the design and development of low-voltage wiring harnesses, ensuring compliance with program targets for cost, weight, quality, performance, and timing.
  • Drive 3D wire routing and package CAD layout activity, utilizing advanced CAD software to create 3D models.
  • Collaborate closely with Systems Engineering on logical and physical schematic development, and with cross-functional teams (design, manufacturing, testing) to ensure designs meet technical specifications and production feasibility.
  • Define and support wire size/type selection, as well as inline connector pinouts and terminal sizing, based on requirements and design rules.
  • Utilize knowledge and application of Six Sigma and 8D methodologies for problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  • Create and maintain program-specific foundation documents, including Boundary Diagrams, Quality History, P-diagrams, and DFMEAs
  • Develop and maintain installation illustrations to facilitate assembly.
  • Release parts in internal systems throughout the product life cycle and actively participate in Change Control Meetings.
  • Audit and update Bill of Material (BOM) with correct part levels and usage for prototype and production builds.
  • Complete Technical Design Reviews with Technical Specialists, and lead EDS compatibility reviews, as well as the sign-off of wiring harness prints.
  • Lead sign-off of EDS Design requirements and Design rule checks.
  • Manage the Advanced Product Quality Planning for components and harnesses with STA (Supplier Technical Assistance) Partners and ensure on-time part delivery from suppliers.
  • Participate in vehicle builds and support parts implementation/sign-off in manufacturing and assembly plants, assisting quality issue resolution in all milestones.
  • Lead resolution of issues that arise during the digital and build phases of Product Development.
  • Review pre-production vehicles for potential campaign items and assess warranty impact.
  • Lead resolution of warranty issues in collaboration with the Product Validation Team and the Supplier.
  • Lead EDS cost analysis/estimates and support corresponding reviews.
  • Identify validation, durability, and functional tests required as per requirements and specifications, utilizing Design Verification tools.
  • Analyze and break down Program Direction Letters and Trim Spiders to account for EDS content.
  • Generate proposals to minimize giveaway cost and reduce total part count, including design optimization proposals utilizing benchmarking.
  • Develop and maintain build-level complexity charts and perform harness complexity analysis, while driving commonality of designs across multiple programs and platforms.
  • Comply with the Product Development Process deliverables applicable to EDS for each milestone.
  • Submit invention disclosures, process improvements, and best practices.
  • Comply with training as outlined in calendar year objectives.

What you'll bring:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or a related field).
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in electrical harness design and development or electrical distribution systems, preferably within the automotive industry.
  • Strong English Proficiency (written, read, and oral).
  • Design Capable in 3D CAD (e.g., CATIA V5, 3DX, TeamCenter, Vismockup).
  • Understanding of automotive systems and functional knowledge of vehicle electrical systems or vehicle wiring systems.
  • Proficiency in Power Bi and JIRA.
  • Technically articulate.
  • Experience in testing and validation.
  • Experience in supplier personnel handling.
  • Experience in manufacturing and assembly.
  • Ability to travel to suppliers or assembly facilities to support Advanced Product Quality Planning and build events.

    Soft skills
